Major Red Sanders Smuggling Bid Foiled in Tirupati; Contraband Worth ₹16 Lakh Seized

In a swift and coordinated operation, the AP Forest Department successfully intercepted a major red sanders smuggling attempt in the early hours of Saturday, July 18. Officials seized 18 premium red sanders logs and a vehicle, collectively valued at approximately ₹16 lakh. One smuggler has been taken into custody.
The Operation
Acting on precise and highly confidential intelligence received on the night of July 17 around 10:00 PM, Tirupati District Forest Officer (DFO) V. Saibaba alerted the regional teams regarding the illicit transit of red sanders to Tamil Nadu via Chinnagottigallu.
Under the direct supervision of Bhakarapeta Range Forest Officer N. Venkataramana, a specialized team comprising range staff, Base Camp personnel, and the Strike Force Protection
Watchers set up a strategic checkpoint at the Kotabailu Cross junction.
The Catch
At approximately 4:00 AM on July 18, a suspicious car speeding from the Chinnagottigallu direction was signaled to stop by the forest authorities.
The Arrest: Attempting to evade arrest, the driver halted the vehicle and tried to flee into the dark. However, the alert forest staff quickly surrounded and apprehended him.
The Seizure: Upon inspecting the vehicle, officials discovered 18 illegally felled red sanders logs. The vehicle and the contraband, estimated to be worth ₹16 lakh on the market, were immediately confiscated.
Official Commendation
The successful breakthrough was executed by a dedicated field team, including Forest Section Officers (FBOs) M. Sadashiviah, J.B. Nikhil, Y. Rajesh Kumar, and C. Ravi, alongside the Protection Watchers squad. Higher authorities have commended the team for their vigilance and prompt action in safeguarding forest wealth.
A case has been registered under the relevant sections of the AP Forest Act, and a detailed investigation is underway to trace the broader network behind the smuggling ring.
